New: Fifty shades of Grey

I got myself some new reading material for the summer at a 1 + second book half price deal. Last summer, I went through countless books so I want to be well prepared this time. Summertime is pretty much the only time I read books because I like reading a book in a few days, not bits and pieces over a few weeks.

I had seen a few online recommendations on these books by EL James (a trilogy, I really should get the third book..) so I'm very curious to see what they have in store. I don't want to read too much about it now because I want to keep the store a surprise for myself. I'll let you know what I think of the books when I start reading them!

Please drop a comment with any other reading recommendations :)

30.05.12

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee is approaching slowly but surely and I can feel the excitement in the air. For those who don't live in the UK, the Diamond Jubilee is big national celebration where the Queen celebrates 60 years as Monarch. I was thinking this is a once in a life time experience so decided to celebrate along this weekend. I'm curious to see what it will be like but I already love seeing the Union Jack and the Queen everywhere I look.

Floral

I tried on a few floral dresses at H&M the other day but couldn't decide which one I like best. I'm looking for a floaty little day dress that will keep me 'cool' during these hot days in London and the long summer which lies ahead. The first one isn't actually a dress, but a playsuit. But that doesn't make it less pretty. The third one has cute little strawberries on it and the other two have a floral print. Which one would you pick?

Some whiskers for you today;) How cute are these pastel-colored cats photographed by Tim Walker? Apparently they were posing like this naturally. Read the story here.

Quick tip, breakfast

The best breakfast addition on a hot Sunday morning? An ice cold grapefruit. Just keep it in the fridge, cut it in half in the morning and enjoy the fresh, pink grapefruit 'flesh' with a small spoon. Almost just as good as watermelon but ten times easier to prepare. Yum!

Park day

Today's plan: a day at the park and a sunset barbecue. For these kind of days, there's just a couple essentials you need to bring with you:

- A big blanket to lie on. Nothing's more uncomfortable than lying on grass and finding out you're lying in the middle of an ant nest.
- Sunscreen. An essential I kind of forgot yesterday, so the consequences are visible today: a sunburn. Lots of Aloe gel helps a little bit, but it's better to prevent a sunburn than having to 'fix' it. For the first tanning session of the year, start off with spf 50 on your face and spf 30 on your body.
- A big bottle of water. The last thing you want is to get dehydrated on a hot sunny day.
- Sunglasses. I don't think I need to state the obvious.
- Music. A summery atmosphere is not complete without some background music.
- Snacks. I suggest popcorn or some vegetables for the health freaks. Or if you're lucky, there's an ice cream stand nearby!

Nostalgia

As I was walking through town yesterday, I saw many people with an ice cream in their hand. And that made me think about one of my favorite ice creams ever: Solero Smoover...which was discontinued a few years ago, as that happens with one's favorite things (why??). Is there anyone else who remembers this sorbet-like ice cream? I used to squeeze it out as far as I could and right before 'the tower' would fall over, I'd eat it. SO GOOD.

Dip-dye

I've always liked the dip dye trend, the blond-brown versions and even the multi-colored versions like this one. But I always thought it was a bit complicated to work with colored dyes which create a huge mess, so I opted for the easy option: an incredibly smart idea I saw on The Beauty Department, working with soft pastels you can find in an art shop.

London blues

The Londoner is, without a doubt, my favorite London blog kept by a girl named Rose. I came accross this post on her blog about the difference between rainy, cold London and hot, sunny London. What she writes is brilliant and spot on, and I couldn't describe the situation any better, so I had to show you what she wrote! Enjoy.

There's something about London in the sunshine that brings out the best in people.
Like any big city, it's inhabitants usually go about their daily business in somewhat of a rageful haze.
It starts when you leave the house and walk into a cold grey drizzle.
You've perfected your cold, hard stare by now and it's the same one you receive from everyone else.
You slowly shuffle into your tube station with all the other quietly furious Londoners and do your best to get to the platform before everyone else.
Having made your way around the maze of tunnels, you'll do your best to read your newspaper in peace and tut loudly at the cretin reading it over your shoulder.
"Oh I'm sorry sir, would you like me to turn the page for you?" You'll say sarcastically (in your head seeing as you're far too British to actually say anything.)
You'll wiggle your way onto an overcrowded train carriage and snuggle up next to a moist, slightly overweight banker who will do his best to make sure your face is buried as deep into his Lynx scented armpit as humanly possible.
Upon leaving the station, the cold, grey drizzle will have blossomed into torrential rain, meaning you'll arrive at work dripping wet and seething with rage about this country, the transport system, the weather, the GOD DAMN pigeons... You name it, you'll hate it.
You'll play this game on a daily basis, only occasionally interrupted by a surprisingly good biscuit, a colleague bringing you a mug of tea, or half a bottle of wine when you get home.
But when the sun shines?
London is transformed.
It morphs back into the place we all knew but forgot existed. Like a relationship gone cold, suddenly you see her in a whole new light. Your heart warms and you realise you could never truly leave her, because you love her so very deeply.
The streets light up, people smile at you in the street, you walk past packed restaurants bursting at the seams with yummy-mummies and bars with pavements full of men with their ties undone.
Ladies slip into summer dresses and boys don their sunglasses in the vain hope that the girls wont notice them looking (we do).
Big cities can be very lonely places, but when the sun shines everyone feels a little closer, a little more human & a little more... like you.

Tea

I thought it was time to show you my tea collection and my personal healthy tea tips. I've never been a big tea drinker (I don't like black teas), but I do love the occasional herbal tea, or even home made iced tea. I'll tell you what my favorite teas are and what they are good for.

Color pop

I found these little gems on Zara's website and I wish I could add all of these to my shoe collection. If I really had to choose... the last ones on the first row, and the middle and last pair on the third row. Which pair would you pick?

Coral bikini

With summer on its way, I decided it was time for a new bikini. So picked a few nice bikinis to try on after work and ended up choosing this one. I was having doubts between white, navy or this bright coral color, but I decided I'm too white to wear white (ha-ha), and navy might be a bit boring. So here's my cute bright red bikini with a hint or orange.

The bikini is well made and good quality so I'm sure I'll be using this one for many summers. I also like how it has support unlike my favorite bandeau bikinis. Can't wait to wear it while lying on a white beach with palm trees and a turquoise sea!

If you fancy this bikini, it's available at Gilly Hicks in the UK/US, and online for the rest of you. Have you purchased your first 2012 bikini yet?

Flower rainbow

Azalea flowers are definitely my absolute favorite flowers. Not because they look nice in a bouquet (they're pretty hard to 'work with'), but because when held outside in the sunlight, Azalea's have the most unreal and beautiful colors ever. And they smell absolutely amazing.

This is also my inspiration for the current bright, flower patterned, neon trends in fashion for this spring and summer.

Celine crush

I'm having a little crush on this miniature version of the oh so popular Celine Luggage handbag, doesn't it look adorable? Too bad the price is a little less adorable. But it's still on my wish list, a girl can dream.

Tan pressure?

I had some thoughts on H&M's 2012 swimwear campaign the first time I saw the images.. and the next 100+ times I saw the images on billboards, online and in magazines. At first, I thought "Wow, those neon bikini's look amazing on that tanned model." But then I was like "Hang on, this model is REALLY tanned, isn't that a bit exaggerated?".

Dark tan, bright bikini.

Recipe: rhubarb apple pie

I made this pie while I was in Belgium last weekend and I wanted to share the recipe with you because it was delicious! This is a small variation on the Tarte Tatin my mom has been making for years and years, which is still my favorite pie. Ever. And it's also one of the easiest pies to make! When I saw the rhubarb in the garden, I decided it was time for some rhubarb apple pie on mother's day.

American flag

I love these shorts I tried on at Topshop last week. But I didn't buy them, because Topshop has very strange sizing (sizes 26 and 28, but no 27?). I tried on lots of shorts but none of the models were completely right, but maybe that's just me. However, I still love the print on these shorts so I had to show them to you!

11.05.12

Back in Belgium. But it feels like I'm in the Amazon rain forest: 25 degrees and rain rain rain. Next step: sunshine and no clouds (wishful thinking?). I apologize for the lack of posts, but my main focus is to pass the theory driving exam so I'm studying and cramming everything into my head. Wish me luck!

My mom made a beautiful looking latte for me :)

MAC Tendertone, Tread Gently

I've wanted this tendertone (lip balm with SPF 12) from the MAC Shop/Cook collection since it came out, but it sold out so fast I kind of forgot about it. Last week, my friend Katarina asked me if I wanted something from duty free since she would go to the airport. Right away, I remembered the tendertone and asked if she would buy it for me, even though I was almost certain it would be sold out. But it was my lucky day and my friend managed to get her hands on the last tendertone in Tread Gently of all London airports (at least that's what the lady at MAC said).

2 Broke Girls

I recently discovered the show '2 Broke Girls'. It has been around since September last year but I've only found out about its existence now. It's such a fun show and like it so much I had to write a post about it. It's about two roommates/waitresses Max and Caroline, who are broke and want to start up a cupcake business to get out of their poor financial situation. Each episode is only 20 minutes so it's the kind of show that doesn't require you to think about the plot or anything (like Desperate Housewives).

Max (Kat Dennings, left) makes the most hilarious comments which make me laugh out loud, which I almost never do when watching a show. Other characters like Han Lee and Oleg make it even better. It's really the funniest show I've ever seen. I'd say, try it out, watch an episode and see if it's your kind of humor.

Drop armhole

I randomly went into the city on Friday with no expectations and came home with 4 tops, one bandeau and a necklace. There were some sales on so I made some really good bargains. I love my purchases!
Awkward pictures in the bathroom.. Everything for the blog!
This is one of the tops I bought: very neon and a very summery and nice looking model. I love the dropped armhole and I had been looking for tops like this for ages (remember the neon yellow top I tried on in Spain?) so I was really happy when I found these (neon pink, neon yellow and two white ones). I love finding things you've wanted for so long in the most unexpected shops!

Anna Dello Russo for H&M

You've probably seen this already but I still wanted to make a post about it: Anna Dello Russo is designing an accessories collection for H&M. I think this is pretty exciting because I love what I'm seeing on this preview picture!

The clutches looks absolutely beautiful! How cute is that little Bambi sitting on top of the turquoise clutch? The jewelry also looks really cool. If you want to see Anna in an interview about the collection click here. I love how passionate she is about fashion and how she says 'Fashion is my alphabet'.

The collection will come out October 4th so that's still a while before another fashion war will take place in selected H&M stores. I can't wait to get my hands on one of those clutches!

Hey Sailor! is MAC's newest collection for spring/summer and I love it! I think it's the packaging that makes everything look very desirable. The collection comes out this month. My favorites are definitely the High-Light powder, the Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder, the Suntints and the lipglasses.

Recipe: "pesto"

I whipped up this super easy and delicious green sauce yesterday. I believe I felt inspired by the Food Network, which I like to watch while I'm cooking. I'm not sure what to call this green sauce because it's not really a pesto, but I will call it pesto just to make it easy. This sauce tastes great as a salad dressing, with some crackers or toast, on fajitas, barbecue meat, on pasta.. pretty much on anything you'd like to eat it with!

01.05.12

First of May already?! Time goes way to fast.. On a different note, I am endlessly in love with my new sneakers, so I just had to show you a few more pictures of my high top babies. I wish I could take some outfit photo's, but I don't have a good camera and I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Maybe when I go home my sister will take a few pictures for me?
