If I'm still eating vegan?

I haven't really written about this topic much in the last few months, so I felt like it was time for a little update! I'm sure you've noticed that meat eating has been a very hot topic in the media lately, especially with some scandals that happened because of video footage shot at animal farms in Belgium and environmental issues becoming increasingly worrying. More and more people seem to finally understand the connection between what we eat and the impact it has on the environment, animals and personal health. So what do I think about it all? And am I still eating vegan? Yes and no. Let me explain myself...

A little recap
For people who haven't been following my blog for that long, here's a short recap. My whole vegan challenge started in August 2015. I decided to do a 21-day vegan challenge just for fun, to see how I'd feel and to find out how hard it would actually be. Turns out it's not that difficult, and once you try vegan it's kind of hard to go back to old (bad) habits. I stopped eating eggs, most dairy, cows milk, meat, poultry, and fish. There were some exceptions, like when I felt like having a bite of fish or when I make pizza for example (with ALL the cheese). I did two "strict" challenges, one of 21 days and the whole of January 2016. What started as an experiment, ended up being a whole new perspective on food. 

New York, New Things to Try
Since I'd been living in Belgium between August 2015 and December 2016, I had been easy to have control over what I ate. I cooked most meals at home, and whatever I cook is vegan, 99% of the time. It has simply become a habit, a good one. But then I moved to New York, food heaven. And while it's super easy to eat vegan in New York, I kind of moved slowly to a more vegetarian lifestyle. I started eating Greek yogurt for breakfast (shocking haha), and when I ate out (80% of the time), I ate vegetarian. Still no eggs and cows milk (unless it was in something baked), but more cheese and other dairy products. 

Eating out in New York is such a big social thing, so on one side I didn't want to be the difficult person, and on the other side, I felt like trying a lot of new things. I wanted to enjoy everything without having to think about whether it was in line with my beliefs about food. It wasn't a big issue at all, but in the back of my head, I thought about cutting back again on dairy products. 

New challenge
So this year I haven't been too strict about eating plant-based foods, even though probably 90% of what I eat is still vegan. There are some things I want to cut back on like cheese, milk chocolate, and sweets/cookies/cakes whatever. Both for my health and also for the environment and animals. I definitely feel better when I actively choose to go for the vegan options, so I feel like a reset is needed. Together with my sister, I decided to do a new vegan challenge starting November 1st, up until Christmas Eve, December 24th. Especially around these months, it's so easy to go for comfort food, and indulge in all things "bad". So up until Christmas, we're going to try our best to make good choices for us, the animals and the planet. Of course, I'll give you some updates! So who's with us?
