Because I'm feeling a little homesick, I thought I'd squeeze in an Antwerp post between all my talk about New York. Juno is a restaurant in Antwerp which opened last summer, so it's still kind of new! They're best known for their beautiful plant-based lunch dishes so I took a friend here for my last lunch in Antwerp back in December.
Juno is located right on the Vrijdagmarkt, which I'd say is a quintessential Antwerp thing everyone should at least experience once. Every Friday buyers and sellers gather here for an auction of everything you could possibly imagine. Mostly furniture but also old appliances, CD's, clothes, bags, lamps, toys... If you have a good eye and you're patient, you could join the auction. But if you're more into watching-while-snacking, then head over to Juno.
The menu is handwritten on a blackboard and changes weekly, if not daily. They have hummus platters, sandwiches, soups, salads and big bowls filled with different vegetables (usually the plate of the week). Mostly vegetarian/vegan stuff but there's also meat and eggs if you're that way inclined.
My friend had a delicious pumpkin curry soup with a side of bulgur wheat.
I just LOVE how colorful this looks! This is something I'd make at home so it's nice to find something similar in a restaurant, it's exactly the kind of food I like. I know it's a lot of work and effort so I think €14 is very reasonable, even though it's pricier than your average sandwich.
Because our dishes were pretty big we didn't manage to try the desserts, this carrot cake looked really good though. They always have one or two desserts on offer, which is nice if you're coming for tea or coffee in the afternoon.
Juno definitely deserves a lot more hype than it does right now. It's a cozy little place and the food is homemade with love and it's good for you too! And they often change their menu to keep it local/seasonal I think so it's worth returning to check out what's new. A really great new addition to Antwerp's food scene.
>> Vrijdagmarkt 5 / Open daily 11-6 TUE-WED-THU and 11-7 on FRI-SAT-SUN / Closed MON

They have a perfect little terrace for the warmer days which are coming soon!

I took the platter of the week which was filled with: falafel, pumpkin, red cabbage salad, bulgur, a cucumber and pomegranate salad and a beetroot yogurt dressing (the only non-vegan thing on this plate). And a side of pita bread!
